New Pad, New Studio Update
At the end of September, I moved out of my small apartment on the 23rd floor of a Manhattan high-rise. My girlfriend and I got a place together—the entire top floor of a 3 story Brookyln brownstone.
The last couple weeks I’ve been busy setting up a new studio in the place. I’m currently working on soundproofing the control room, which will also be the live room for awhile. I also got a new Macbook Pro so I can do some editing and mixing on the road.
Now for the extremely nerdy soundproofing info… So far, I’ve put down a layer of mass loaded vinyl, sound absorption foam, and carpet over the wood floor. I called a couple soundproofing companies to get recommendations on isolating a room in an old brownstone and they both recommended green glue. Basically, you use it to stick two sheets of drywall together, and it gives them the sound dampening properties of eight sheets of drywall. I’m putting up these walls this week.
Soundproofing is a pretty big pain in the ass. But I’m trying to enjoy it—and it will make a huge difference since I’ll be able to bang on my piano without bothering the neighbors (and owners) below. Once it’s all done, I’ll be able to record a bunch of new material I’ve been working on, and I’m looking forward to that.
