Iron and Wine with Calexico

I caught Iron and Wine at Webster Hall last night. It’s the second time I saw them there, but this show was way different than the last. The breadth of their musical palette is amazing.

First of all, this show was part of a tour promoting Iron and Wine’s new album with Calexico, entitled In the Reins . I’m not that familiar with Calexico, but they did their own set and it rocked. Guys were switching instuments (from trumpets to xylophone to accordian to electronics) and every song was totally different than the last.

There were a few other artists on the bill, most notably Salvador Duran, who Sam Beam and Calexico kind of discovered in a hotel lobby in Tucson. Iron and Wine did a set on their own, followed by a set with Calexico. At times there were at least 11 musicians rocking out at the same time, and in multiple instrumentations. Some of the resulting sounds were completely new to me and fascinating–electric and acoustic guitar with drums, bass, accordian, xylophone, shakers, trumpet, harmonica, and three-part harmonies. And the whole time the music had some seriously tasty grooves (to quote the “D”).
